Hamilton County middle schools have launched a dynamic improvement initiative based on the county’s successful high school reform effort, Schools for a New Society.

Beginning in 2005 with Hamilton County’s five most challenged middle schools, Middle Schools for a New Society has now expanded to every one of Hamilton County’s middle schools. $8.5 million in funding has been provided by the Lyndhurst Foundation and the National Education Association Foundation.

Leadership teams of students, parents, teachers and administrators at each school have come together to study effective methods for school improvement, and have developed plans focused on the unique needs of their own school.

The goals are ambitious:

• 100% of students will score proficient or above on state exams in reading and math;
• The number of students scoring "advanced" on reading and math will increase by 5% each year; 
• Schools will receive Value-added scores of "A" in reading and math
• Achievement gaps will be eliminated.
